Wasn't that the point of YouTube, like... always? 🤔 As far as I know, YT was always a for-profit project and since there's no subscription fee I guess that's how they earn money.
they used to only put ads on >10 minute videos, subsequently >8 minutes and for those who had opted into advertising on their channels and sharing revenue (which recently was only made available to more popular channels with larger subscribers). This suggests Google aren't making as much money as before (and are worried about increasing regulation).
TBH I could easily see the lot going the same way as the Library of Alexandria when it becomes less profitable..
Yes, they do it and they will do whatever they like to maximise their profits and minimise risks. So they certainly will not only add more ads but also remove content they don't like and kick youtubers that bring regulation or bad publicity.
