What if they just didn't want to hold that discussion in public? Simply trying to keep a low profile on that? I'd honestly not be so quick in judging Signal here...

Maybe yes, maybe not. If the researchers went public, and then to the media, this usually indicates they were continuously ignored by the vendor.
