Request for donation solution recommendations (KoFi, buyMeACoffee, Paypal, Liberapay, etc)

If I want to put up a tip-jar of sorts for folx to toss me a few coins for the various #coding / creative related things I do, what services would you recommend?

Especially interested in hearing stories from people who have actually used multiple.

So, if you have any #recommendations for or against things like #KoFi, #BuyMeACoffee, #PayPal, #Liberapay, #Patreon, etc, please let me know. :)

@FiXato
This is something @humanetech and I intend to research in some detail this year. Please let us know what you find out.

At the moment I maintain this #delightful list, where many candidates are waiting for inclusion in an issue. If you find any more it would be wonderful if you could add..

@koherecoWatchdog

I use LiberaPay and I don't blame devs for their technology choices

@kravietz @espen @strypey @FiXato @humanetech Why wouldn't you hold #Liberapay accountable for their choices, if not pure & simple irrational bias?

Request for donation solution recommendations (KoFi, buyMeACoffee, Paypal, Liberapay, etc)

@koherecoWatchdog @espen @strypey @FiXato @humanetech

Because they provide an useful and needed service for the community. As such, they should be in the first place supported rather than shamed & blamed. As they themselves live from donations, the latter can only drive people away from them, and we will again end up with PayPal & friends as the only alternative.

Request for donation solution recommendations (KoFi, buyMeACoffee, Paypal, Liberapay, etc)

@kravietz @humanetech @FiXato @strypey @espen It's unacceptable that #Liberapay has made all the poorest decisions. They're a steamy pile of shit that baits users to use the most privacy-abusing facilities. They should be shamed until they get it right. You can avoid all that garbage by accepting checks in the US & IBAN wires outside the US, & crypto currency or villages.io for cross-border txns.

> Accepting checks

WTF? You mean the tiny paper forms as sometimes seen in 80's movies? So you are suggesting a developer should expose their postal address to receive a letters with a check for $5, then take it to the bank... and this is good for privacy?

@kravietz @espen @strypey @FiXato @humanetech Checks can be paper or electronic. And paper checks don't require an address (search "poste restante")

@koherecoWatchdog @espen @strypey @FiXato @humanetech

Any more 19th century ideas for sending money?

On the bridght side, I'm sure this would be a feature most welcome by Ted Kaczynski living in an off-grid trailer in a desert.

@kravietz @humanetech @FiXato @strypey @espen checks are 21st century in the US. American millenials are using "Zelle", which is still a check (an electronic check).

Request for donation solution recommendations (KoFi, buyMeACoffee, Paypal, Liberapay, etc)

@koherecoWatchdog @humanetech @FiXato @strypey @espen

I get it. So a bank in US came up with a new product called "Zelle" which is "a check" (you) that is "not a check" (US Bank) and it's privacy-friendly because it relies on US banking system which is built on top of Amazon, Akamai, CloudFlare and other privacy friendly tech.

Request for donation solution recommendations (KoFi, buyMeACoffee, Paypal, Liberapay, etc)

@kravietz @espen @strypey @FiXato @humanetech i wouldn't use zelle myself, but considering your demand to be modern and whatever issue you have with paper checks, zelle is for you. But putting #PayPal in the loop is a stupid answer b/c to avoid the donee from seeing who you are, PayPal tells 600+ companies about your txn

@koherecoWatchdog @espen @strypey @FiXato @humanetech

> But putting in the loop

Exactly. It's you who is pushing people into the hands of PayPal by throwing shit at LiberaPay.

> whatever issue you have with paper checks

Man, what are you even doing on Mastodon? You should be posting hand-written notes on lamp posts in your area and request people drop their checks into your PO box.

@kravietz @humanetech @FiXato @strypey @espen #LiberaPay *facilitates* PayPal. That's on you, not me. I'm condemning both of them.

Request for donation solution recommendations (KoFi, buyMeACoffee, Paypal, Liberapay, etc)

@koherecoWatchdog @humanetech @FiXato @strypey @espen

I've never used PayPal with LiberaPay. I support a dozen of projects and have a direct debit set for all of them from my GBP and EUR account.

If some donors prefer PayPal, it's their preference and LiberaPay helps developers get paid this way.

Request for donation solution recommendations (KoFi, buyMeACoffee, Paypal, Liberapay, etc)

@kravietz @espen @strypey @FiXato @humanetech you don't have to use PayPal to support PayPal. You support PayPal by supporting LiberaPay.

Request for donation solution recommendations (KoFi, buyMeACoffee, Paypal, Liberapay, etc)

@humanetech @FiXato @strypey @espen @kravietz BTW, the debit card Liberapay accepts is evil too. It's not a Discovercard/JBC/unionpay card.. it's visa, m/c, or amex, which the article addresses

Request for donation solution recommendations (KoFi, buyMeACoffee, Paypal, Liberapay, etc)

@koherecoWatchdog @humanetech @FiXato @strypey @espen

You are quite uneducated in the topic, and yet speaking from a position of authority.

DIRECT DEBIT is not the same as DEBIT CARD.

Direct debit is when a bank directly charges your account without any card processors.

I appreciate it may take another 50 years for that to appear in the US...

Request for donation solution recommendations (KoFi, buyMeACoffee, Paypal, Liberapay, etc)

@kravietz @espen @strypey @FiXato @humanetech ah, you said direct debit and i read it as debit card

Request for donation solution recommendations (KoFi, buyMeACoffee, Paypal, Liberapay, etc)

@humanetech @FiXato @strypey @espen @kravietz nonetheless, you're still supporting a system of privacy abusers and letting CloudFlare & Amazon see all your transactions

Request for donation solution recommendations (KoFi, buyMeACoffee, Paypal, Liberapay, etc)

@koherecoWatchdog @humanetech @FiXato @strypey @espen

So let's look draw a summary:

* LiberaPay is bad because it uses CloudFlare and Amazon

You propose:

1) Cryptocurrencies, even though almost all exchanges also run on CF & AWS

2) Bank transfers, even though banks also run on CF & AWS

3) Paper checks, which nobody outside rural US uses

4) "Electronic checks", which are US marketing alias for 2)

Request for donation solution recommendations (KoFi, buyMeACoffee, Paypal, Liberapay, etc)

@kravietz @espen @strypey @FiXato @humanetech 1) Cryptocurrency payments don't inherently need an exchange; but if you choose to exchange there are p2p options (#bisq) 2) banks that avoid CF & AWS listed here: git.disroot.org/cyberMonk/libe 3) stupid argument; any US bank acct can deposit paper checks rural or not

Request for donation solution recommendations (KoFi, buyMeACoffee, Paypal, Liberapay, etc)

@humanetech @FiXato @strypey @espen @kravietz Also note that if it's important to you to avoid the bank in the US (to ensure no CF or AWS), you can get a money order with cash, and money orders can also be cashed by recipients who have no acct. And the money order can be sent poste restante to conceal recipient's address and senders identity

@koherecoWatchdog

Fantastic, I'm certainly going to return to all your recipes for fancy ways of sending money in the event when I move to US and open a clandestine meth lab.

For now I'm just going to stick to LiberaPay.

@humanetech @FiXato @strypey @espen

@koherecoWatchdog @espen @strypey @FiXato @humanetech

I'm not in the US, just as 96% of the world's population so your checks are useless to us.

> Cryptocurrency payments don't inherently need an exchange

Oh so you just stash them and enjoy?

> there are p2p options

Have you *actually* ever used Bisq? I have.

@koherecoWatchdog

> banks that avoid CF & AWS

Actually, looking at the list of "ethical" banks I must correct my plans - I'd need to move to Southern Vermont to use one.

And remind me, is Akamai good or evil in you reality? Because this is what Amalgamated uses:

cibng.ibanking-services.com.edgekey.net is an alias for e29141.a.akamaiedge.net.

@espen @strypey @FiXato @humanetech

Request for donation solution recommendations (KoFi, buyMeACoffee, Paypal, Liberapay, etc)

@kravietz @humanetech @FiXato @strypey @espen Akamai is big and that in itself is a problem b/c it could be a central point of monitoring, but OTOH their notorious competitors are relatively worse.

Request for donation solution recommendations (KoFi, buyMeACoffee, Paypal, Liberapay, etc)

@koherecoWatchdog

Ah, so Amalgam Bank is not "ethical" now, it's merely "less evil"...

And you only know about Akamai because I told you, because whoever made that list didn't care to check the bank's transactional part of the website.

As I said before: the level of your zealousness is proportional to your ignorance.

@humanetech @FiXato @strypey @espen

Request for donation solution recommendations (KoFi, buyMeACoffee, Paypal, Liberapay, etc)

@kravietz @espen @strypey @FiXato @humanetech my stance has always been to patronize the lesser of evils. It's not important whether a bank is blacklisted or whitelisted, as the details are presented for ppl to decide for themselves what aligns with their values. I teetered on whether Akamai is significant enough to be noteworthy, or clutter.

@koherecoWatchdog @espen @strypey @FiXato @humanetech

You are supporting PayPal by throwing shit on LiberaPay which offers a number of *alternative* payment methods.

LiberaPay allows me send and receive donations *without* even touching PayPal. If you kill LiberaPay, then PayPal will be my again only options, as it was 10 years ago.

And no, I don't want checks, cryptocurrencies and other crap.

Request for donation solution recommendations (KoFi, buyMeACoffee, Paypal, Liberapay, etc)

@kravietz @humanetech @FiXato @strypey @espen as I said, I condemn both Liberapay & PayPal. You're supporting both b/c LiberaPay enables PayPal.

Request for donation solution recommendations (KoFi, buyMeACoffee, Paypal, Liberapay, etc)

@koherecoWatchdog @humanetech @FiXato @strypey @espen

No, you are the one actually supporting PayPal business interest by your zealous campaign against one of the very few micropayment services that actually work.

Request for donation solution recommendations (KoFi, buyMeACoffee, Paypal, Liberapay, etc)

@kravietz @espen @strypey @FiXato @humanetech you're still pushing a straw man. I said I condemn both Liberapay & Paypal
