Told littleun about baguettes this morning and had pangs of homesickness for going to Asda in the evenings and getting the morning's baguette for 16p. A bloody metre of delicious crusty bread for pennies. Baguettes over here are like two or three dollars!
I sent some American mates pictures of the cakes and biscuits aisles last time we visited and after they'd stopped drooling at the variety and colours they went "...wait, is ALL the food that cheap?!"
Surprisingly, a lot of foods are also cheaper in the UK than in say Eastern Europe, where wages are much smaller. And I don't only mean "cheaper relative to wages" but actually cheaper nominally, dollar for dollar.
