Wow is it true that driving under the influence #DUI in the USA is an average of $6,500 for the first offence!? That would likely discourage folks from trying that as I think #SouthAfrica is probably a good 10 or 20 times less...

@danie10 in the UK (for alcohol, drugs or both) its normally at least a 1 year ban from driving, a fine, license points (or revocation for new drivers in probation period) as well as massively increased insurance premiums for 11 years afterwards, so its a similarly expensive penalty (but this only started being the case from around the late 2000s as testing and ANPR enforcement became more effective)

On the other hand in Poland we had an overzealous regulation a few years ago where people were getting actual prison sentences for drunk bicycle riding (!) and there were cases where they would be actually arrested while walking (!) the bicycle home under influence.

@kravietz

TVP did fine a cyclist for DUI (both alcohol and drugs) in the mid 90s, but they were swerving all over the whole of Broad Street, Reading, scattering pedestrians and even causing a bus driver to take evasive action and "Echo Tango" (the town CCTV scheme) had just been recently installed so there was plenty of evidence - and an amount malice/aggression on the part of the cyclist as Broad Street is big and there is really no need to ride in such a manner..

In Germany, only beginners and bus drivers get fined below 0.05%. Others get away with 500EUR and 1 month ban up to 0.11%. On repeated offences, this doubles and tripples. Over 0.11%, we are talking criminal offences with fines up to 6500EUR and longer bans. But more importantly, your insurance will not cover damages even with a low BAC level. This is a much higher risk than the actual fine.

Yeah, that would account for a vandalism or antisocial behaviour. Polish police was for a period of time bumping their statistics simply by watching on CCTV who's leaving a pub and even touching their bicycle. Of course, this wouldn't happen without first legislators making it a law (which was then revoked).
