@kravietz i remember reading a similar argument about some other formerly-communist nation -- that the government decided to show "dallas" thinking it would serve as a portrayal of everything wrong with america and capitalism, but the viewers decided otherwise

Ah, this makes perfect sense indeed. In communist Poland we were told people in the West are generally very unhappy, which obviously strongly contrasted with testimonies of whoever was lucky enough to go there in person 😃
