This and only this is why they are not Western. For fuck's sake! One of Russia's national founding myth is the battle of Kulikovo against the Golden Horde. I just wrote to @dump_stack privately that the best cure from nationalism is DNA analysis (like MyHeritage, 23andme). Especially in case of Eastern Europe, where masses of humans were flowing here and there for centuries -- and that's great from evolutionary point of view :)
