They start big: 716'000 off-shore wind turbines. To give you an idea how many that is, UK recently deployed an off-shore wind farm of 116 towers occupying 70 km2.
Per Stanford model, we'd need no less than 432'000 km2 or 1.2x size of Germany or a square of 700x700 km2 (with actual wind & sea depth).
But then, they mention 2.3m on-shore turbines...
