You're completely mixing up two political systems.
Social democracy, starting from Liebknecht (Social-Democratic Party of Germany), was always pronounced primary enemy by Marx in 19th century, and then in similar fashion Western social democrats were pronounced as "reactionary" by Bolsheviks.
Social democracy has thus nothing to do with communism and most Europe was spared from even having a light touch of it.
