Leave <input /> alone. When you fuck with the behavior, it breaks and makes my experience with your site severely dissonant. This is doubly true when you just throw it out and implement your own special snowflake combo-box or something.

This crap websites come up with is unaccessible and broken. You don't know better than the web browser.
