Account migration "easier than ever, and with 3.0 comes the ability to bring your followers with you like magic!" Thanks a lot! I think that's one of the most important feature for a decentralized network! https://blog.joinmastodon.org/2019/10/mastodon-3.0/ #Mastodon
I am extremely happy that @firstname.lastname@example.org has responded to the community's concerns and have put in a lot of effort to make Synapse and Riot a more privacy friendly place 😄 — Very glad to recommend them again for group chats on http://privacytools.io: https://github.com/privacytoolsIO/privacytools.io/issues/1389
Someone give me a column I have *things to say* about how DoH is not the boogeyman and about Voatz changing their bug bounty safe harbor after the fact to justify turning over a student to the FBI and about how FB's e2ee is good, actually.
Hi Fediverse 👋
let me tell you this: Thank you all for the feedback, wishes and support offers so far! I'm very optimistic that we will get this project continued together ⏩
Before the next big steps, I will take a break for a few weeks. So, might get a bit silent here. I'll try to visit once in a while but internet access could be rare sometimes 🏖
While I'm away, you may also have a look at @privacytools and their software section 📋
Mark Zuckerberg would put a piece of tape on the camera and microphone of his computer.
At the same time he bought the 4 houses around his home to protect his privacy.
Image loading issues on instance
Hello! Just wanted to let you all know that if you are or have been seeing image/media loading errors that is being investigated. We use Wasabi for media storage on the backend and it appears that they are experiencing performance issues on their side (https://status.wasabi.com). Clicking images to load them manually or refreshing the page should help.
Funny how nobody warning about DoH ever notices that "organisations" could indeed run their own DoH/DoT servers and implement any policy they like https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/news/security/dutch-govt-explains-the-risks-behind-dns-over-https-move/
Main limitation being of course that it would require ten year long transition program as your whole "organisational" DNS runs on some ancient crap commercial or cloud nameserver, who only heard about DoH/DoT in 2019 and it's just as new to them as say IPv6
Instance News: v3.0.0
Hey look, an update! What's new? All sorts of stuff, I guess: https://github.com/tootsuite/mastodon/releases/tag/v3.0.0
Having "nothing to hide" is not an excuse for giving up your liberties. Protect yourself from mass surveillance programs: Learn how at https://privacytools.io/
New @privacytools blog post especially for iOS users! ✨ Here's how to enable DNS over HTTPS using any custom provider, including the ones we recommend:
Things I liked about 80's/90's computing:
- Total control over my hardware
- Software that worked with me, not against me
- Superior aesthetics (yeah I said it :3 )
- Overall sense of promise and freedom
Things I like about computing today:
- Easy and open access to knowledge
- Insane amounts of storage
- The sheer computing POWERRRR
Now if only we could make these attributes come together instead of being period exclusive.
"M" is the letter tech people attach to things that are shittier than a different thing with the same name.
For example, NVIDIA graphics cards with "M" after their serial number are weaker cards meant for laptops.
Google Chrome has an "M" version for Windows.
Microsoft has Windows 10 "N" because they needed to go an additional letter into the alphabet to describe just how shitty it was.
Instance news! (Tor)
Hey! I'm pretty sure I got Tor federation working on social.privacytools.io! There aren't too many Tor instances to test but the ones I found appear to work.
Now we just need more Tor instances to gain in popularity. Maybe when @MasTorDon comes back online their timeline will be more fun 😄
With #OutlineVPN, hosting your own VPN has never been easier. Give it a shot: https://blog.privacytools.io/posts/self-hosting-a-shadowsocks-vpn-with-outline/
It's official, blog.privacytools.io is live! I've imported a couple backdated posts for testing :)
In the (near) future we'll be posting more long-form articles/guides, news on privacy, etc.
We're also looking for guest bloggers! If you're interested definitely get in touch. We would also be open to "syndicating" (https://indieweb.org/POSSE) previously published articles if you're already a writer in the privacy space.
