Instance upgraded to Mastodon v2.9.0!

**New Default Layout**: Single-column mode (instead of Tweetdeck style), can be reverted in user preferences.

Some other cool stuff too, check out the full change log for more information: github.com/tootsuite/mastodon/

@dansup ah drats! Well, can't wait, hope it happens soon 😄

@dansup hey quick question for you, just saw this GitHub issue: github.com/pixelfed/pixelfed/i

Is this still the case? ("S3 not supported") I'd love to get an instance up and running but I'd need that first 😃

Sysadmins in Training

@mrbean bro this would be sweet, I forgot you're from Minnesota lmao

I don't know what Pixelfed needs resource-wise, similar to Mastodon? Find me on Matrix sometime I'll see what I can do.

@Paul highly recommend Mailcow, I use it for @privacytools.io, @opennic.org, and some of my personal emails :p

@Paul sorry, didn't see this! Yes, this is a new feature in 2.9.0 (we're on the 2.9.0rc2 beta), so it will be coming soon to all instances. It's going to be the default view now, but you can switch back to tweetdeck-style multi-columns in your user preferences.

Updated instance to Mastodon v2.9.0rc2!

Still beta software, because I like living on the edge.

Should fix the /custom.css redirect issue we were having 😄

@glitcher32 FYI AMD PSP is not nearly as bad as Intel ME IIRC, because it doesn't allow a lot of direct control or network access like ME does. So even if that particular CPU has PSP it shouldn't be as bad as Intel in that regard.

@glitcher32 AMD PSP was introduced in 2013 (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AMD_Plat) so you'll want to find your CPU model and see when it was introduced and if it has PSP.

Any Mastodon know how S3 works with multiple instances out of the box? I want to share media across a couple instances without duplicating it.

@mrbean you gotta have some interesting use for it :P

@danarel @switchingsocial@mastodon.at I think they mean it in a general sense, like “users spend most of their time using a web browser” 😜

But idk! Maybe it’s not as privacy respecting as we’d hoped. I haven’t researched Brave too closely.

@eleix yeah honestly I’ve had pretty good success with even smaller budgets, I’ve found decent servers for like $15/year some places. Sure only 256 MB RAM or something, but more than enough for DNS, maybe some static sites. Messin’ around.

I used to get free server space for a while, sometimes I just give out servers to people myself, to pay it forward. Surprisingly few takers lately though 😅🤷‍♂️

Sysadmins in Training

@eleix hahaha fantastic. You’re right, that’s the only way to learn! Hopefully the lesson they take away is to buy a VPS 🤷‍♂️

I find it funny to come across younger people who are experimenting around with running servers. I was exactly the same way when I was younger. Someone was asking to create a OpenNIC T2 server and asking if a 10 Mbps upload was good enough 😁

Unfortunately you can't sway them, they are determined to do it even if it means their connections get flooded by bots. Ya live and ya learn I guess.

Sysadmins in Training

@eleix tbh the speed is probably fine for a DNS server, but they’re presumably talking about a home connection and the latency is gonna kill them 😅

And yeah, bots...

@Mayana well, content warnings are working for me on Chrome, Firefox, and Safari, but I'll keep an eye out about that issue. Weird stuff!

CW test

@Mayana when I have more time I’ll try it out in some other browsers and see if I can get it to not work. Maybe I jumped the gun on 2.9.0 since it’s still a beta I guess haha! But I like shiny new things.
