@pkntl Different audiences, I think StartMail is probably fine privacy-wise, haven't used it myself, but ProtonMail is much more focused on the security aspect and I think does a better job at it IMO. I'd probably go with ProtonMail personally.

@Mayana wdym? you don't need accounts on other instances because people can follow you on this instance from any other instance.

If you need a login on another one for some reason, yes you'd need to make a different account, although I can't really think of a use-case for that :)

@Mayana Thanks for joining! Nice to meet you 😄

Hope to see you stick around!

Alrighty all, I made a thing! Try out privacytool.io's new Searx install: search.privacytools.io/

If you want to use it, please report any issues you find 😅 github.com/privacytoolsIO/sear

@xioren00 yeah.... I think I'm going to get my own searx install setup. Seems like the best route.

@absturztaube those are the two I hear the most... I've used DDG in the past but their results aren't the best IMO (although I do love their "opennic servers" instant answer).

I haven't tried Startpage yet, is it any good? I'm not sure if I totally trust them, but user consensus seems to be they're OK.

I'm looking for a new search engine, what's the best one out there right now?

@Forcen@niu.moe @BurungHantu that is a setting the instance admin can set. It can either display the federated timeline or the instance's local timeline. I think this one shows federated (I believe that's default) because federated typically has more traffic and therefore looks more inviting, I guess?

Why arn't smartphone cases with camera covers more of a thing? There must not be a demand, but I sure would like one.

@filikun it could be an app issue, but also because of how federation works with past posts (kinda badly), they might just not be showing up on this local instance because it typically doesn't import past posts (see: github.com/tootsuite/mastodon/) from before anyone on this instance followed them.

The good news is, future posts should show up normally now that someone on this instance is following them. If you want to see their past posts you need to go to mastodon.social/@protonmail and interact there.

@6gain I don’t anymore, but when I did it was mostly just to follow others. I’m probably going to setup as an instagram replacement though!

Out of interest, how many of you fediverse people also use Instagram?
Please do reboot for coverage. Genuinely curious about the state of photography these days.

The European Parliament just passed a copyright directive containing #Article13, or the "meme ban." We are concerned about the amount of power this directive could give monopolistic tech giants, but our #VPN can always be used to access blocked content. protonvpn.com/blog/article-13/

whats up i have a new project!!

📺 default filename tv 📺

is a youtube tv website that only cues videos that never had their filenames changed out of the camera

they've got a vibe and i love watching them, maybe you will too:

defaultfile.name/

(also great for obliterating youtube's watch data profile on you)

I just setup an #ActivityPub for new #Mastodon, #Pleroma, and other fediverse servers. Feel free to connect your instance! 😀 relay.fediverse.us/

Where are other instances posts? @cassolotl@dev.glitch.social made a nice flowchart 😀

New uBlock Origin permission

@nikolal ah thank you! this just showed up for me and I was wondering about that...
