I changed my mind: I want to try out going invite-only and see how it works out for us. We're getting a lot of registrations but it seems like most accounts aren't even used. I strongly believe in quality over quantity and I hope adding some limits will help keep our conversations great!

@jonah I think this is the best way forward to.

Now people that only have an active interest will be able to get in and all the spam bots will be SOL πŸ‘πŸ»πŸ€–

@jonah Let's experiment! As a community (if I may be so bold since I just arrived) how do we measure if this is a success or not? Jonah, can you share the following numbers each month and we can see if the trends are going as expected:

- count of toots flagged as spam
- count of invites sent
- count of new/dropped accounts

If we see drop in spam and some usage of the invites then we are good. Back up plan is what @josantleon@mastodon.social mentioned about removing inactive accounts.

@jonah Could you setup the forum to do something like send an automatic invite once someone reaches the Basic level? Not that the forum badge will become a requirement for access to this instance or the only away to get an invite, but that might produce more interest from those already involved in the forum.

Instance News

@jonah do you have the way to have the potential new user send you an essay stating why they want to apply and still have to wait for your approval even after validating a valid email. If you rely on other users to invite others you may be upset with low new user statistics

@jonah How would I go about joining your instance?
