@dallin that is another option! Maybe it will be less frustrating this time now that you’ve had experience with it before. Have your looked at /e/ phones? I think you can buy them preloaded with their OS.

@dallin shucks, I hadn’t looked into it that far yet. I guess in that case I would buy a used smartphone from kijiji.

@dallin one thing I’ve considered doing is carrying a dumb phone (with wifi hotspot ting available) all the time, and then having an iPod or smartphone I can use just for maps or what have you on the days I need it.

One day, the inventor of USB will die.

They will try to lower his casket into the grave.

It won't fit.

They'll have to raise it out, turn it around, and lower it in the opposite way.

Then it will go in.

Food, bees

@GwenfarsGarden@sunbeam.city that looks lovely!

@resist1984 I agree that it’s not great that the internet is concentrated on the servers of a few corporations but I don’t see the an effort like this: gizmodo.com/i-tried-to-block-a being worth it. I need the Internet for far too many things for work and day to day functioning.

@resist1984 I’m pretty decent at regulating my phone use, but I am conscious of the possible reddit time waste. As for AWS, I don’t get as far as avoiding sites served by AWS or google. Props to those who find a way to do that, but I just take the trade off because SO many things are on those servers.

Anyone here use reddit as well? What’s your favourite Reddit app? Been trying to find a nice open source iOS app (I know - apple - but I don’t want to throw out something that still works).

Social advice, religious institutions, not religious myself, community-building

@hummingrain any chance there’s a Universalist/Unitarian church in your area? They might be worth a try, if there is one.

@jojo @Gargron I refuse to use life itself on the grounds that it is proprietary software and therefore oppressive 😤

Perhaps a silly question, but what do y’all with privacy-indifferent friends do for chatting? I have signal for a few friends, and telegram for my spammy computer science friend group chat, but the great majority of my friends are iMessage/SMS/Facebook contactable only (and I deleted Facebook).

How do you either convince them to switch or limit your privacy risk in chatting with them?
