Mastodon has just been updated, and now suggests people to follow to new members.

If your instance runs version 3.4.0 or higher, you can opt in to this follow suggestion feature by going to:

Preferences > Profile > Suggest account to others (tick the box, then click the Save Changes button at the top)

This also adds you to the profile directory.

Instance admins can add or block suggestions, so if you see someone unsuitable being suggested let them know.

Just stumbled on a site that sells ā€œagedā€ Facebook accounts - fake accounts that have been curated over time to be real to Facebook.

Although I’m not surprised there’s a market, scrolling through it brought some realism to it.

New data shows that in some parts of California, the average vehicle will be scanned by an automated license plate reader every few miles. Tiburon Police, for example, averaged one plate scan for every 1.85 miles driven.

This is a 24/7 stream of House and Techno music. It's powered by Owncast - a self-hosted FOSS live streaming solution. Music is produced by AI.

Intelligent house and techno music, mixed by AI.
:arrow_right: https://tv.dub.ninja/

Since the music is produced by AI, you can tune in anytime at your own will, and there will be infinite music waiting for you. This is not bad. I'm enjoying this while doing some light work and it's serving me quite well.

If you want to explore more of Owncast self hosted livestreams you can check out Owncast directory. More are announced by Owncast bot on Mastodon. It's a new project, but people are excited about it. Owncast is a very young project started in 2020 and just has 994 commits as of writing this.

If you have a post on Mastodon that you want people to see when they browse your profile, you can pin it to the top.

Find the post you want, click on "..." below it and select "Pin on profile". You can unpin by the same method.

This is particularly useful for introductory posts, or other information you think people should know.

Unlike Twitter, you can pin many posts at once on Mastodon.

Every instance on the Fediverse has its own set of rules written by the people who run that instance.

If you disagree with them, you can move to another instance with different rules.

This is how the Fediverse differs from centralised social media such as Twitter/Facebook/IG, there is no single group or person with power over everyone.

On Mastodon, you can see your instance rules by clicking on the "About this server" link in the bottom left.

Your car is broadcasting data about where you go and what you do. And now a surveillance contractor wants to sell this data to the U.S. military, including "real-time locations of specific cars in nearly any country on Earth."

I wish there a way to post to just your mastodon instance. Not followers, or unlisted... just...instance.

@gritnot Yes bit rot is a really problem with storage media, I deal with this in my work. But unreadable formats are becoming an alarming issue as times goes on. You only have to go back to the 90's or even less to run into these issues. We are in the informational age and creating it faster than ever, and so much of it is bound in Proprietary formats and containers we may never be able recover this information in the future.

Anyone have any other instances to check out? Tech or crypto or general knowledge?

There’s some real garbage servers out there in the . I’ve just been browsing a few and I’m glad my introduction was on this one. I usually read privacytools and fosstodon and that’s about it.
