I mentioned this a while back when Mastodon was still fairly new
Running an instance is a pretty good substitute for Facebook for families, if at least one family member is tech savvy enough to set it up
Each member can use a client of their choice, fitting their platform, set text size limits, and also choose which instances to federate with (or none at all) depending on their preferences
I did see a number of family instances back then so they were at least testing the waters

Digital security trainings have a better chance of succeeding if all learners have a similar threat model, but sometimes trainers are asked to work with broad audiences. Here are some tips for what to do when that happens. https://sec.eff.org/articles/different-threat-models

While many people rightly are concerned with the power of companies like Amazon, Apple, Facebook, and Google, the uproar around Section 230 is misplaced. Itâs not 230 that is the problem. Itâs oligopoly. https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2021/01/its-not-230-you-hate-its-oligopolies
What is an acceptable amount of insect parts and rodent hair in your peanut butter? If you're in the USA and eat food from commercial food sources, the answer probably isn't "none". As it says on the site, the amounts are expected to be less than the amounts listed: they're "defect action levels" meaning it's something the FDA would act on if that amount is detected, but it's worth thinking about the fact that we're accepting these limits already.

The problem with with designing metrics is that behavior ends up being optimized towards what's actually being measured as opposed to what was intended. The same problem exists in the context of machine learning and managing human organizations.

The ongoing events around /r/wallstreetbets teaches us, once again, about the value of open platforms, and the tremendous risk involved in using proprietary platforms. The economic elites who control those proprietary platforms, backed by their venture capital interests, will shut us down if we threaten them. Weâre taking serious risk by casting our lot with them.

When a company does the right thing for its users, EFF will stand with it, just as we will come down hard on companies that do the wrong thing.

Privacy is necessary for an open society in the electronic age. Privacy is not secrecy. A private matter is something one doesn't want the whole world to know, but a secret matter is something one doesn't want anybody to know. Privacy is the power to selectively reveal oneself to the world.
