GitHub has removed the ability to access youtube-dl's source code due to a DMCA request by the RIAA

... The clear purpose of this source code is to (i) circumvent the technological protection measures used by authorized streaming services such as YouTube, and (ii) reproduce and distribute music videos and sound recordings owned by our member companies without authorization for such use. We note that the source code is described on GitHub as “a command-line program to download videos from YouTube.com and a few more sites.” ...

I'm seeing more of those "all ads are evil and should be destroyed" takes on the fediverse, and while I don't entirely disagree, that mentality needs to be supplemented with "give money directly to your favourite creators/news sources".

Otherwise, you're just telling journalists, creators, and other people that they should work for free.

So someone who I've been in close (ish) contact with just tested positive. I'm not displaying any symptoms but I guess it's off to isolation for me 😷

Use a mask, use Tor.

Today we’re launching our year-end campaign centered on the ways we can care for ourselves and our community: by masking up and using Tor. Anonymity loves company, after all.

Help resist the surveillance pandemic. #UseAMaskUseTor

GitHub Certificates have just launched in Beta and they suck. They only have options for GitHub at the moment, so whats the point. They won't make you any more credible as a developer, and employers won't care if you have one in your resumé.

Here's an example question:

> Which GitHub product includes a cloud-hosted and self-hosted deployment option?

No-one cares it's just shitty marketing. I had high hopes but they were clearly misplaced.
