As promised to celebrate #DataPrivacyDay we will be sharing a variety of tools and resources we’ve been producing as part of our efforts to demand effective protection of people and their data.

“…the mutability of the past”

“It was therefore necessary to rewrite a portion of Big Brother’s speech, in such a way as to predict the thing that had actually happened.”

“But actually, he thought as he re-adjusted the Ministry of Plenty’s figures, it was not even forgery. It was merely the substitution of one piece of nonsense for another.”

“…when once the act of forgery was forgotten, he would exist just as authentically, and upon the same evidence, as Charlemagne or Julius Caesar.”

Some phrases in 1984 are downright scary.

@thenewoil this is not a reason to distrust the BBC. It's a reason to dislike the BBC, but not distrust them. Plus, I got them to remove CNAME Cloaking (at I least I claim credit for).

Privacy is necessary for an open society in the electronic age. Privacy is not secrecy. A private matter is something one doesn't want the whole world to know, but a secret matter is something one doesn't want anybody to know. Privacy is the power to selectively reveal oneself to the world.

Privacy... is an experience which is performed and therefore does not pre-exist in particular designated spaces. Privacy, then, is dependent on context and intimacy; it is negotiated between the people who participate in a communication process.

This is as true of privacy as it is of politics, or any other subject. Always try and understand the other side.
