My first blog post - the merits and caveats of WriteFreely (and a mini-rant on why I'm never touching Medium ever again):

Small actions, even on tasks you'd rather avoid, make them easier to accomplish.

Just finished watching the documentary The Great Hack. It's shocking and terrifying how something as simple as a personality quiz, or a meme shared on social media, could be used to influence the rise and fall of nations. This is why privacy and data rights are so important: everything about you can be used against you.

Just watched #TheGreatHack on #Netflix. What I appreciated about this #documentary on #Facebook and the whole #CambridgeAnalytica scandal, is that it's one of the few #privacy #documentaries to get that protecting personal data isn't just about not seeing personalized ads for stuff you're more likely to want. It's about protecting ourselves from mass psychological manipulation and behavior modification techniques. These are techniques that actually work *best* when people believe they don't.

Looking forward to seeing what comes of this cool new project from IVPN.

!rold is #DDG's Reddit bang.

For old.reddit.com

And it's shorter than the standard reddit bang!

Yup, as excellent #FOSS options like NextCloud + OnlyOffice emerge, it's increasingly unpalatable handing profit-motivated monopolies (with a decades of predatory tactics and lock-in user exploitation) *full* control of your biz's, org's, customers', or *your country's* data. Ditch MSO 365 & Google Docs.

You can check the compatibility of your #XMPP server from compliance.conversations.im/

You can also execute the same test from your local PC by building the tool yourself: github.com/iNPUTmice/caas

A lot of buzz about LastPass. If you're looking for a different password manager, there are also:

1️⃣ KeePassXC
2️⃣ Bitwarden
3️⃣ 1Password
4️⃣ Firefox Lockwise

And here's how I deal with my logins, passwords and 2FA markosaric.com/password-securi

Starting with a tiny step to work on something you’ve been avoiding will make it easier to tackle.

Cutting Google out of your life: a website with a long list of possible alternatives to Google services and products.

TIL Kevin Sonney and Ursula Vernon, the people behind the fiction podcast The Hidden Almanac, also have a productivity-focused podcast called Productivity Alchemy. Also, Kevin Sonney writes for Opensource.com!

I will have to stop my server and thus some services.
That means, I will remove "how to" videos hosted on peertube.fedilab.app and plan.fedilab.app for scheduling toots on a web browser.
The source code remains available and you can host it on your own sever if you want.
Sorry for inconveniences.

Looks like there's already an existing fork of Laverna, called Encryptic.

Oh, I only found out today that Laverna has officially been discontinued. How unfortunate.

I never used it, personally, but it seemed like an interesting FOSS project.

So I've decided to build an accompanying site to go along with my Making A Website posts.

It kinda works like a wizard that shows the results of each step at the click of a button.

The design of the site itself is how the resulting website from this series will look.

If you're interested, please do check it out:

Let's remember, in the tortuous world of copyright, patents, and trademarks (what many unhelpfully lump together as "Intellectual Property" but is more appropriately "gov't granted monopolies") justice is only available to those with $. You have to risk everything to take someone else to task for infringement. For the #FOSS world, licenses must be used as a passive deterrent not an offensive weapon (as mega-corporates use them - they can all afford to maintain stables of litigation specialists).
