oh pleroma has a media-only view on profile pages.

there are still problems with this approach (i may want to just see art but i get everything thats an image instead)

@oct2pus Masto has that same issue.

perhaps a "tagged media view" could be useful. An artist could tag their art with whatever, plop that tag into a config ( defaults to #art or #fediart or #mastoart or #pleromart or whatever ), which would then display a gallery of that artist's works.

Alternatively, a local version could also be made, similar to masto's list functionality, plop in the tags commonly used by artists to denote their works, and you can see the images your instance has spotted.

@clarjon1 i think you're avoiding the issue that tags should be more functional in general. Mastodon and Pleroma are not amazing art platforms to begin with (although pleromas wider view does lend towards a better linear timeline experience, ala tumblr). One thing that would help is to be able to search arbitrary tags on peoples profiles. This puts the onus of effort onto the searcher (who want that control) and makes artists lives a little simpler. This also encourages more granular tagging. Maybe instead of just #Mastoart I tag #superwholock #doctorWho #4thDoctor #scarves #fanArt #lemon.

listing 5-10 most common hash tags would be helpful too.

@oct2pus

I wasn't intentionally avoiding the issue, I wasn't aware that the search functionality for those tags was lacking so much.

More granular tagging is definitely needed, but that's more of a cultural(unsure if right word in this context. community maybe?) issue, tho the tech that allows a user to look up information based on these tags would definitely need improvement.

I completely agree that the tech behind it needs to be improved on, after testing it a bit.

@clarjon1 apologies 4 being hostile. I was sorta responding to an idea instead of you, the person who is talking to me which is rude af.

anyways,

I was talking about the cons of tumblr tagging as the content blocker but also it REALLY encourages you to tag mundane shit like fan content you like or just pictures of food, this can really help you reach an audience of people who do really just wanna look at pictures of food or cats.

I think introducing hashtag encouraging features is honestly the best way to go about getting people to use hashtags seriously.

I don't actually know what those would look like tho, my pixelfed idea would encourage artists but not like, rando on mastodon dot social who wants to talk about cats a lot.

@oct2pus
No problem, I know very well the struggle of accidentally showing hostility without intent, happens when I'm frustrated :)

Do you think that an art focused relay might be of assistance?

A relay geared around art communities, to make populating timelines with that desired content easier. Perhaps biasing what it relays on tags, so that stuff sent out has to at least have some sort of art tag?

This way it would only redistribute artworks, boosted artworks, but not generic posts.

@clarjon1 @oct2pus idk whether iโ€™m understanding yโ€™allโ€™s conversation correctly but i feel like mastodon.social/explore is an ok kinda-solution? b/c it lets users opt-in to being listed on an instance-wide list per hashtag, i.e. social.privacytools.io/explore which lets you explore tags and lets users control whether they want to be listed on the list

@dan @clarjon1 honestly i hadn't contextualized this feature that way. In this context honestly thats a good idea even if its not the way I would personally have gone about it. Still, this should be an opt out. I have strong opinions and I think people who are okay with or want this feature is greater than the amount of people who don't (but they still deserve that sort of respect, ofc). I'd also like if it was a bit more prominent but I don't use mastodon so maybe it is?
@dan @clarjon1 I also think actually...showing the posts would be nice. Seeing who blogs the most about #linux is one thing, but I generally want immediate gratification when I'm looking for fan art.
