@nikolal Thank you for that link! I need to brush my math a bit before understand all of that, but it is fascinating! I know Fourier is used everywhere in tech and it's a nice thing to understand.

It's much easier than it seems to create this kinds of images.

Wrote some thoughts on electronics, software, longtermism. Trying to make sense of all this in my head.

All it costs to fulfill the average person's needs for digital services is a $5 per month VPS instance. It's even cheaper if you buy a single board computer and host your services at home.

We've been letting companies steal our personal data and sell it to the highest bidder and destroying democracy in the process all to save what? A coffee a month?

This is one of the worst deals in history.

โ€œAlso I think it's important to understand that you can't win Mastodon. On Twitter and Facebook you can try to have the most followers and the most engagement. But distributed systems don't cater to that thinking.โ€

@fireglow @glitcher32 I checked for alternatives to Google Captcha and unfortunately there isn't much I could find, so until we have good alternatives, we can't tell those websites what else they could use...

@fireglow @glitcher32 I avoid websites like that too and It's sad but we might not have good alternatives. I sent Pixabay an e-mail to let them know about this and they replied to try another browser. In other words Firefox + uBlock thinks I'm a spammer so I should use Safari without ad blocking so they can track me.
Anyway, maybe if enough people tell them about this, they will take some action.

Second day in a row I'm trying to create an account on Pixabay.
But Google reCAPTCHA is impossible to solve... I abandoned again after almost half an hour!!! Yes I was that stubborn that I classified the fucking busses cars and traffic lights FOR FREE for Google and in the end I decided it's not worth it and I still don't have an account...

@neauoire I agree with you for privacy and security reasons: iPhone 7+ don't have physical buttons and they scan your fingerprint everytime you press the round button. The latest versions don't have any button at all, which scares me a lot

Security is an expectation, not a feature.

Users may notice a new security reminder prompt every so often!

Algorithms for de-duplicating and renaming images in such a way that visually similar images have very similar values.
It doesnโ€™t matter the name of the image file, it's about the content of the image. As a bonus, resizing the image generates very similar values too.
