Re. the recent block of Iranian and Ukrainian Github users - while platforms like Github are very useful, let us not put all of our eggs into one basket (especially when they are proprietary). Itβs made me realise that I personally rely too much on these monolithic services, and am looking to use more decentralised (or better yet offline + local) systems ^^

@greyor I guess I should put an emoji for my previous question, because it was a joke π
@greyor Nice. I got scared when the whole privacytools.io went down.
Was there a fight between good and evil when this happened?
School grades are useless arbitrary numbers.
Because they represent a single, subjective point of view, strongly biased by the teacher's personal preference towards specific solution to an exercise.
To make them relevant, a student would need to be evaluated by a statistically significant number of teachers, say 10 at least. But that's not practical.
The most intelligent people have mediocre grades in average. But again, so do the rest of the people. Hence my point.
@neauoire Beautiful and hypnotic
@zippy99 Yep.. Θi tu?
@tbd Nice one! Saving!
@jonah Donated. Keep up the good work!
Hey-o! Just want to say if you're enjoying our Mastodon server, our Matrix chat, or anything else we're doing @ privacytools.io, I would really appreciate it if you'd consider donating any amount towards our costs π
We're currently spending around $60/month on servers and other infrastructure, and we'd like to be able to pay our team more in the future! We prefer https://liberapay.com/privacytools.io/ but there are many other contribution methods at https://www.privacytools.io/donate/ π Thanks everyone!!

@neauoire I will use this to allow thumbs-up, thumbs-down and comments on my blog, but the database will be public, readable and on Github.
@neauoire I have a early-stage WIP text database that I want to work on soon: https://github.com/croqaz/text-db
HOW: You load multiple JSON lines files and live query them.
WHY: Because I want to have multiple sources of truth that I can import, manipulate and export, and both the input and output should be readable.
My new bot, @SecretlyPublicDomain, highlights pre-1964 books that entered the public domain because their copyright wasn't renewed.
Until May, it wasn't possible to find these books on a large scale. Now it is: https://www.crummy.com/2019/07/22/0
@jere @neauoire @jrc03c this is my go to for mental models https://fs.blog/mental-models/
@Wetrix I totally agree with everything you're saying, but playing the devil's advocate.
I have all my backups on external drives and build my own sites.
I also very much believe in decentralized services, that you can run yourself.
