@switchingsoftware I feel like the site is missing a section for 'Alternatives to iTunes Music Store/Amazon MP3 Store/etc'. Is something like Bandcamp recommendable over other them? It seems to grant a significantly larger portion of the profits to the artists, but I don't know much else.
I’m sure some purists will be upset about stickers being added to #Signal.
Anything that helps convince nontechnical friends and family to use Signal is a win in my book. Network effects for the win.
@Blort Interested, but 1) I'm unsure of what hardware to get to get a cheap, green server for self-hosting and 2) unsure whether choosing 'between' ecosystems like Yunohost, Nextcloud and Freedombox will lock me out of/into certain apps for the things I want to host. (Example: I run Plex (Premium Pass) on an old Synology NAS which now refuses to update Plex because the hardware is deprecated, so I'm missing out on new features. Would like to avoid that kind of thing.
@pixelfed Yes, opt for transparency wherever possible or FUD about censorship is bound to happen
@trevdev @protonvpn @pixelfed That's a stretch at the current point in time. Although hopefully that will change - probably already is, slowly but surely :)
@danarel Not trying to second-guess your picks, but this is the first time I've seen FastMail mentioned in a privacy-context. It's a great email service provider, but what are its privacy chops? Also, am I paranoid for being sceptical of providers based in Australia?
@switchingsocial@mastodon.at @staltz An organized push for more donations would be cool! Using myself as an example, I use a lot of FOSS that I would like to give back to, but it's far from easy to figure out who to donate to and what donations go towards, and it's hard to pick a 'most deserving' project. Ideally, I'd pool my donations.
I know there are places like https://www.spi-inc.org, https://liberapay.com/, https://opencollective.com/ etc. etc. but it's still a jungle to sort out who's where, etc.
@privacyint erh... How?
@jj I think many have been using that fact (that private companies can do whatever they want) as an argument for slapping heavier regulation on Facebook and Twitter due to their sheer size, and the role they have started to play in public (political) discourse in many countries. In my country, all MPs basically make all their political statements and debates exclusively on Facebook, further blurrying the line between 'Oh it is just a private company' and 'This is protected speech'
@aral We already have great cars that are safer and sustainable. Their big problem is that they don't have the logo of Mercedes-Benz or BMW on the front. The biggest problem of Linux is not a problem of availability as much as a problem of branding. Distros like Ubuntu, Mint, etc. are as simple to use as any competitor, but why take the chance with some weird penguin stuff when everyone else uses good ol' Windows? It's the tragedy of the commons.
Although with the way Win10 has been going...
@aral This might be a bit off-topic (and slightly political), but this runs parallel to a dilemma in liberal democracy as a whole: It requires the voter to possess a minimum of knowledge about the options, otherwise demagoguery and spin (or, in the case of tech, branding and marketing gimmicks) will rule the day.
That's not saying such results won't be legitimate (people still *choose* Windows or Mac), but the problem is that bad arguments/tactics are rewarded, and good solutions overlooked.
@privacytools I'm currently using NordVPN mainly due to a cheap 3-year deal. Was considering ProtonVPN (already love ProtonMail), but that's a definite step down.
As for PIA, I've heard a lot of positive about it, but the whole drama surrounding them smearing Proton last year gave me pause - I don't wanna reward shitty behavior.
@Gina @ecosteader How are you 'locked in'? Can't you just use the Data Export function to pull everything out?
We've been using Salesforce for about 2 years now, but as an NGO their insane data storage prices are hurting quite badly, so I'm not ruling anything out in the future... but what are the alternatives? MS Dynamics? MS are not exactly bastions of ethical behaviour either. Then there's CiviCRM but that's pretty barebones AFAIK...
Suicide
@fructose_dealer@quey.org I guess the notion that "(human) life is sacred" underlies almost every culture on Earth as a self-evident truth, and I guess when held up against the individual's freedom to choose, the former wins out?
Besides, societies usually aren't interested in their members leaving it, and killing oneself is a very permanent way to leave society, so that's another angle motivating it to keep its constituents alive and present.
@BurungHantu Are there any pros/cons of joining your instance compared to others? Would the reach of blog posts be the same regardless of hosted instance? I'm new to the whole federated systems thing 😀
