This seems weird: when I SSH into a newer MacOS from my workstation, what home directory my user is assigned varies by which Windows shell (or perhaps SSH implementation) I'm using to get there.
cmd (I assume using Microsoft's SSH): /var/empty
Cygwin: /Users/[username]
The environment (i.e. what you see when you type "set") is quite different as well. Very strange.
The intelligibility of this is really interesting, because it suggests that the technological capacity to easily share complex still and moving images is incorporating them into quasi-written language as if they were universally intelligible ideograms.

I’ve commented before that Star Trek’s most prescient prediction was communication via memes in ‘Darmok’. So it was only a matter of time before someone started making these:

Can we please, please – PLEASE! not make the nonsensical US date format month/day/year the default in applications? 🤦♂️
PRE 👏 TTY 👏 PLEASE
And to all users of that format: it makes no sense, it's counter-intuitive, it makes collaboration frustrating, it introduces inconsistencies and errors... Just stop. Please. Use international standards.
(And don't get me started on your other units of weights, volumes and distances. Bloody hell.)
Boost if I'm right.
#ddrescueview is a #ddrescue map file viewer.
ddrescueview displays a ddrescue map file, including all rescued sectors, bad sectors, currently processing sectors, etc. ddrescueview supports viewing active map files with a configurable update rate. Sectors display detailed information when clicked. Sector types can be recoloured and reprioritized in the sector listing.

I think a big part of why modern social media (including Mastodon) is so bad is that it jettisoned the topic-based organization of Usenet/BBSs/forums. Like if you saw rec.nazism and loaded it up and saw Nazi shit, you would not be surprised.
The follower model doesn't have that, so shit's all over the map.
Instance blocking is sort of the same thing as that, but seems wildly inefficient to me.
Maybe we should just... go back to topic-based discussion.
Q: How can I tell if someone online is a Libertarian?
A: Don't fret, I'm sure johngalt2008, aynrandlover, a_is_aForevvah, and dagneytaggertsghost will find some subtle way of tipping you off.
#LogisimEvolution is a continuation of #Logisim.
Logisim Evolution is a #digital #circuit #simulator based on Logisim. Evolution adds many new components, including numerous 74 series chips, lots of new IO, a VHDL component, and many other complex components. Evolution also adds numerous UI improvements and the ability to put the circuit on an FPGA for real world testing.

Probably is by now, yeah.
So many people saying they're switching from Firefox. Won't this only make the problem worse?
If you're switching to Brave or qutebrowser or UnGoogled Chromium or something, you're only strengthening Google's monopoly. If you're switching to a Webkit-based browser like Epiphany, you're shifting the monopoly towards Safari, whose parent company doesn't consider the Web a priority.
That Mozilla has bad management doesn't change the fact that Firefox is the most viable option for the open web.
The whole article is very interesting but this!
"Twice a day, Earth’s crust rises and falls with the tides. Although we’re more familiar with ocean tides, the solid Earth experiences the same forces as our oceans. As the Sun and the Moon pull on Earth, the entire planet flexes and stretches. In some places, the surface of Earth rises and falls by as much as 40 centimeters."

#Protip: "Drafts" on Mastodon
Mastodon doesn't natively support a "draft mode", where in-process toots can be saved and re-edited.
... but ... you can emulate this by setting default posting to "DM", and not filling in any recipients. A DM toot not shared with any third parties is visible only to yourself. You can then post, and delete/redraft this toot until it's complete to your satisfaction.
On devices/platforms where Web content is prone to disappear without notice (o hai Chrome Android mufferphuckerz) this may prove useful, especially where researching links / content for a substantial toot.
Please consider writing your hashtags in upper camelcase so screen readers have a chance at figuring them out.
#whyistayonmastodon sounds like an giant undecipherable mess of sounds.
#WhyIStayOnMastodon reads out "Why I Stay On Mastodon" 😄
(Reason #44 I stay here: my previous requests like this have been generally well-received, proving that most people are awesome.)
