A recent article on a big tech news site included this phrase:

"[...] Linux phones like the PinePhone, [...]are full of closed-source firmware from non-open components"

We'd like to clear the record: The #PinePhone has two blobs -- neither runs on the main SoC: One loaded to WiFi/BT module, other enclosed within the cell modem. In the modern world of tech, both blobs are unavoidable.

Puppy Linux and Alpine Linux should also work on such limited hardware.

@dredmorbius Usenet had an X-No-Archive header that might or might not be respected by the various news servers. DejaGoogle did/does respect it, and so its archives are incomplete. Mastodon might profit from a similar mechanism.

The station is owned by a Florida-based company and will play six hours daily of content from Radio Sputnik, which is (I shit you not) owned by the Russian government and outputs their state propaganda.

Russian state propaganda being broadcast on an American radio station in Kansas City.

Lenin is reputed to have said "the capitalists will sell us the rope with which we will hang them." and as time goes on I can see what he meant.

@caltlgin@masto.nixnet.xyz @lightweight I called them to delete my late grandmother's account and it was pretty easy.

@dredmorbius I can confirm that this process works for Linux as well. Have had to do this myself when Windows didn't want to cooperate.

@dredmorbius we used to get Zagg folios for iPads. They're basically a case that's custom fit for that specific model plus a Bluetooth keyboard slotted into the bottom half. Something like that workable?

@dredmorbius er, MI /Pad/. Android device name is "clover". There's a larger version called the Mi Pad 4 Plus as well.

@dredmorbius It also ships without Google Play services but they can be downloaded from a forum. As dodgy as that sounds, it worked fine as an interim measure until I got it unlocked.

@dredmorbius If you'll consider buying a more modern tablet, I have a Xiaomi Mi Tab 4. Good performance, there are third-party ROMs available, has an SD Card slot. Unlocking was a pain in the ass because you need a compatible SIM card (it's a China-only device; mine is gray-market) and have to wait two weeks after requesting the unlock, while using it somewhat frequently; it's some kind of anti-theft misfeature.

@Harena I use "NOAA Weather (unofficial)". It doesn't talk to backyard weather stations, but it will show temp in the status bar and it has a nice widget.

@byuu@mastodon.social suggestion: it might be more intuitive to have a graphical representation of the various parts to configure.

For example on the Super Famicom, a central pic of the console surrounded by empty boxes with lines pointing to where they would attach, and the boxes with drop down selectors. The controller ports with drop downs populated with the different controllers, the expansion connector likewise, etc, and maybe a button saying "configure..." attached to each.

@amolith@masto.nixnet.xyz you can use Calibre to manage your ebook library and convert them into different formats.

news categories

I wish there were better categorization of articles for certain news sites that I subscribe to.

For example I’d love to turn off all the non-policy relevant common crime news. (Does that gruesome murder have policy/societal implications? No? Then I really don’t want to read about it!)
