in my dream-future-present there are countless protocols and countless apps that use countless subsets of them to communicate. some types of data are appropriate for broad syndication, some aren’t, but in either case it’s trivial to prove matters like authorship or integrity for a given object or identity. ā€œthe webā€ becomes an emergent property of your infra’s supported protocols rather than a bequeathed index of purchased names

About time somebody wrote about Silicon Valley apologists

"The prodigal tech bro doesn’t want structural change. He is reassurance, not revolution. He’s invested in the status quo."

"Prodigal tech bro stories skip straight from the past, when they were part of something that—surprise!—turned out to be bad, to the present, where they are now a moral authority on how to do good, but without the transitional moments of revelation and remorse."

# Regarding why software is so bad

> There is no way for Google, Facebook, or Twitter to quit ad revenue and continue to exist in the marketplace. There is no way for Microsoft or IBM to turn down contracts with body counts and continue to maintain their power. Profit enthralls them, and it infects our craft. To afford food, we have paywalled the sum total of human knowledge.

@gabriellelim We're glad it exists too.

I was going to ask if you had any suggested readings or a bibliography, and do you ever: citizenlab.ca/wp-content/uploa

(That's 72 pages worth, peeps.)

@sifr
And the war continues.
Thanks for the info.
I have accepted the new permission before I got to read it. I was afraid to be left there standing unprotected 😃

That is still many bugs but yeah. Looks like if you disable JS (Firefox with NoScript) WP gets 100,001 times more bugs :D

@nautilus@framapiaf.org
Wait... ecosystem has so many vulnerabilities that it has a dedicated site to track them?

"Cataloging 1,824,218,242 WordPress Core Vulnerabilities, Plugin Vulnerabilities and Theme vulnerabilities" (commas added by me)

Tell me this is a joke.

Aggrorithm (n): an algorithm written to incite aggression. Aggrorithms are a dark pattern employed by businesses with bottom lines tied to confrontation and conflict (ā€œengagementā€). Profiling data is used to nudge users into conflict and increase revenue.

DRM for everything

@freakazoid
We are already here. I can't log in to my bank web site since they use app as second auth factor and that app refuses to run on my degoogled phone due to it not passing Google's DRM check.
I keep an old phone around just for this app now.

Advertising Is a Cancer on Society

...Real world advertising is not about informing, it's about convincing. Over time, it became increasingly manipulative and dishonest. It also became more effective. In the process, it grew to consume a significant amount of resources of every company on the planet. It infected every communication medium in existence, both digital and analog. ...

@kravietz
That is true. Let's hope Germany won't set a trend in Europe though...

@kravietz
Said that, fear fueled against nuclear power by fossil industry is so powerful that it alone killed thousands of people and probably will eventually lead to social collapse, war and destruction of life supporting environment. Countries will deploy gas, wind and solar mix that will initially reduce CO2 emissions but economic growth will quickly catch up any savings made.

@kravietz
I have looked into numbers and other facts around nuclear power and it is hard to not agree with this article. Nuclear power is the safest, cheapest to operate (capital costs are high) and cleanest (zero emissions) source of energy that can be deployed everywhere no matter the climate and that can generate power at full capacity day or night, wind or not, available today. Have that been deployed as effectively as in France we would have saved tens of millions of lives and tons of CO2.
