@alcinnz Reminds me of a post about invention of the printing press. There is a pattern here, we should be smarter by now...

5. We demand complete control over the users.
@th heh locking the door and putting the key under the door mat... also bitlocker with TPM actively prevents you from restoring your files when your mobo breaks.
@emacsen Oh and requires no client side storage per "password"... but requires server side support.
@emacsen https://www.grc.com/sqrl/sqrl.htm Uses asymetric crypto, nothing to leak, protected with password (something you know), can be backed up, provides "password reset" flow and requires no special device to work.

I keep a phone like 3 years out of support, full of preinstalled spyware to use my banking app as it will refuse to run on my clean up-to-date rooted phone... yeah, makes sense.
@fribbledom There is a third option: You get tired and end up installing something like https://github.com/auchenberg/volkswagen ;-)
@liaizon Yes; Most phones share RAM access with the GSM modem CPU...
Okay, who's willing to bet #Apple will use the #Pegasus leak to push their anti #RightToRepair FUD?
This month I got two new devices that lay at extreme ends of a certain spectrum:
1. Netgear switch (GS110TPv3)
2. PinePhone (1.2 beta)
The switch welcomes me with: "Skip Registration and Temporarily Access All Features" - limited to 3 times! Otherwise requires Andorid app install to register and cloud manage.
PinePhone allows me to try 17+ different distros out of the box - just flash an SD card.
I hope for OpenWrt support for the Netgear...
@liaizon
Someone said they use portable GSM base stations. So sounds like they use GSM modem to exploit.
@cadadr minimalist Gentoo: 1) Connect your device; 2) cd /usr/src/linux ; make menuconfig
In case you missed it - I've made a 28-minute tutorial introducing basic concepts of sound synthesis using 100% libre software. Someone even called it a masterclass :D

@joerebelloharley also, look at Rich Felker's blog https://ewontfix.com/
He described a lot of nasty problems he stumbled upon when writing a libc.
The biggest issue of outsourcing tech knowledge/competence is that you need to accept lots of high-trust relationships with organisations that are very much not worthy of trust...
