That sounds rough. I appreciate your offering a viewpoint I hadn't considered.
We're planning to release a simple palette for now, but we'll try to follow up soon with a second version to try to address some of these issues.

Is there a risk that high contrast contributes to a seizure? If so, how do you handle that? Browser extensions to make things more muted?
@Xantulon @attackfish @cryptpad
Yea, we have to consider what's best for the users and also balance that against how complicated a feature we can realistically support as a small team.
It's tricky, but it helps to hear different perspectives on the issue.
A member of our team installed the "let's get colorblind" extension for firefox: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/let-s-get-color-blind/
It gives you an idea of what different people will see, but doesn't go so far as to offer a preconfigured set of colors that people could adopt.
For example, I know if I want to choose a font which will be easier to read for people with dyslexia I can use https://opendyslexic.org/
From what I can tell there's no ready solution for accessible color palettes.
I agree with having more hints, but we're taking this one step at a time.
"check the red folder" is guaranteed to happen, I was just hoping that we can make it so instead of "red" it's something more people can recognize.
It's possible there's no set of 16-20 colors that satisfies these constraints, I don't know, but I'd rather hear that answer from someone with firsthand experience before making a decision for them.
We're working on adding colors for folders in CryptDrive (https://github.com/xwiki-labs/cryptpad/issues/383) and trying to decide on a color palette.
While there are lots of resources available for choosing small palettes which are accessible to people with colorblindness, we're having trouble finding larger ones (16-20 colors) which are still pleasant enough that people won't yell at us for being bad designers.
Can anyone point us in the right direction?
