he was abused as a puppy until we got him at 8 months old. He was kept in a cage & yelled at so loudly that neighbors could hear it. It also took 3 people to physically stop me when I found this out from handing out my own violent justice to his previous owners.
He's 14 now, & if there's only one thing I could accomplish in this life, it's too make him so loved that he doesn't remember it. That it's a distant memory he can't even recall. Just a bad dream.

We have a turtle with somewhat similar history (people often buy them as toys and don't bother caring for them), my wife got her into our family and now she's a healthy & happy little thing.

The most important thing to know is that they require quite some care: they need an UV lamp and a basking lamp\spot
Aquatic turtles need a powerful philter to clean their waste _and_ a partial change of water from time to time.
As pets, they are different. Some like to cuddle and sleep on their mamas, others may bite and pee :)

Ours also love doing crazy stuff in the water, jumping from her basking spot, etc.
