I'm all for privacy, security, federation, etc. I love mastodon, use matrix every day, hell I self host nextcloud - but if you think that any of these platforms will EVER be as big as their counterparts (matrix -> discord, masto -> twitter, etc) then you're just delusional. Again, hate big tech, tracking companies, etc, but by having so much data they have the power to propel themselves to the top and stay there, if you're a service that respects privacy and don't collect data, you're fucked.
@ThreeBadgersInATrenchcoat what is matrix?
You know honestly I don't want these programs bring that big because you get to the point that signal is at. You get so big that you need money.
You either have to sell or start extracting money from your users via adds or charging for the service.

@mistermonster @ThreeBadgersInATrenchcoat oh really?? I never heard of that before! I'll have to look it up!
This sounds alot like ICQ? 😅
@mistermonster @ThreeBadgersInATrenchcoat I tried it and was in our privacy chat for a bit but I don't think it's quite my thing. I'd get addicted to it and destroy what little reputation I have 😅😆
There was alot of people in there!
It's something like ICQ, except that the goal isn't a proprietary silo, and individual identifiers are not archaic. It's more akin to IRC or Jabber, or even email, and I could bore you with technical differences all day.
There are a lot of technologies I think you'd be interested in, matrix is one of them. You should try it out, I'd be happy to talk to you on it and get you involved. I'm surprised that you aren't familiar with a lot of stuff, considering your interest in online privacy. @ThreeBadgersInATrenchcoat
