@hyperfocal @resist1984 @ademalsasa @Tommy I've heard good things about "searx", though I used it for a few days and certain search terms would give *zero* results while ddg had plenty. Very strange.

@brad
Hmm.. that's interesting.
Were you using searx.info/
or searx.xyz/ ?

If you go to searx.me/ , you would have to find a instance, just like Mastodon, and maybe that instance didn't have anything.

Stay Safe!

@Tommy I was using this one: https://search.snopyta.org
(found from the https://searx.space/ list)

and it wasn't that it didn't have anything. I used it for general searching for days and 90% of things went through, but for some reason certain search terms seemed to break it or something.

@Tommy
Just found this on wikipedia about google blocking searx.me:

"Another reason to use different searx instances, and/or to run one's own, is that as of 2019, Google has begun to block some instances, including some of the IP addresses used by searx.me (former instance run by the developer), from querying it, resulting in a "google (unexpected crash: CAPTCHA required)" error.[39] "

@brad

@mf @brad
Woah! That's probably it! Thanks for telling me that! Google...

@mf @Tommy I don't remember which search resulted in it to double check, but I believe it was just a message that there were no results (a bold claim) rather than a specific error. I hadn't even quoted my search terms or anything, so I'd think it should find some generic similar things at least instead of refusing to show results.
