When will Signal finally allow users to upgrade legacy groups to new groups? Like I've got a couple groups already established in which I'd like to take advantage of the new group features but I can't because it's a huge hassle to make all new groups and there's no way to just upgrade. They said that you'll be able to in the future, but they've said that since they rolled out, seems like a pretty big feature to ignore.

I've been researching on essentially the best messaging apps that aren't Matrix or Signal, as while they're top notch services, I was curious what I could use that had no reliance on a central server. This turned out to be a huge rabbit hole and something that is next to impossible to find. Briar has no desktop clients (bar a scuffed Debian client), Tox leaks more metadata than Discord, Jami is so unstable that it can barely be classified as "ready for use", etc. It shouldn't be this hard.

My hosting related poll has ended recently and the verdict is in - if (and that's a big if) I can get the funding, we'll be hosting already established apps and services for the community. I'm extremely excited for and am looking forward to hosting for the community in the most private way possible. Hopefully more information coming soon. πŸ‘

I haven't played a first-person shooter game in over a year and it shows. My aim is so shit now its crazy.

Just launched into Cyberpunk 2077. Most hyped and expected triple a game for the past couple years running flawlessly on Linux. Fucking nuts.

People who can read/speak another language, how did you learn it, or what program did you use to learn it?

Totally off topic from the rest of my account. Death trigger warning.

Death is such a haunting thought. Like think about it for a moment. Its terrified me for the better part of this year, less because of death and more because of not knowing what is after. Like if there's an afterlife, what is it? Is it something like here? Is it good and peaceful where you can be with your friends and family? Is it infinite torture and pain? Is it nothing? I don't know - it keeps me up at night. Just thinking.

Been using for the entire time I've used Mastodon, but due to some in my opinion questionable philosophy on their part, just today I switched to - been absolutely loving it thus far and can't recommend it enough.

I'm trying to decide whether it would be better to try to work with the community and build services from the ground up, or host a much larger selection of already established, privacy respecting services, and just store as little data as possible on privacy respecting VPSs.

Alright so I've been thinking about this for a while and I think I've finally got it planned out. The TL;DR is, imagine a set of privacy respecting services, out of the 14 eyes, all encrypted, with minimal data stored on servers, is censorship resistant, and more. This is what I'm going to be trying to build if I can get enough funding and support for it, which at the moment isn't looking great - if any of you would like to support this, I would greatly appreciate it!

Thank you all so much!

Working on a privacy website featuring guides, suggestions, information, etc. I've been using Jekyll with a certain theme but it just doesn't look great so I'm just wondering - do any of you have any static website theme ideas? Doesn't have to be for Jekyll, it can be for any of them, thanks a ton in advance.

Ubuntu Touch still is unusable almost three months after installing it. Swipe gestures barely work and only register, much less work properly, like 15% of the time, it's slow, lacks privacy, security, or strong sandboxing, has minimal app selection, crashes frequently, no good browser, etc. I mean Graphene, Calyx, Lineage, OmniROM, GlassROM, or almost any other ROM thrashes it in every respect. I hope it gets better but it is just a horrible choice as it stands now.

What's happening to Grapheme is genuinely so disheartening. I've loved the project (despite and at the same time due to its at times abrasive developer) for the past while and just hate to see this happening to them. If you aren't up to date on the situation then I'd encourage you to go read the legal suit and documents.

Okay so the Google VPN - literally only good for watching like Netflix from another country but even then for really $9.99 (I know it's bundled with other things but still) its a total ripoff. Mullvad or IVPN are VPNs that are ACTUALLY GOOD and are way less money but Google will launch an over the top and deceptive ad campaign that will make a ton of people buy it. It's so destructive to the privacy community but it's only going to get worse when other big tech companies do the same.

Why's crypto so hard to get without KYC that needs like a social security number or passport? It's invasive as fuck and I hate it.

I've been looking to host some services and keep them as privacy respecting as possible to give back to the community who has helped me so much, so I've already worked out some things but my biggest roadblock so far of the monetary aspect. So my question is kind of this, do any of you know of a way that I could raise some initial funding to get the project off the ground? If you do I'd love to hear about them and I'd greatly appreciate any input. Thanks so much, have an amazing rest of your day!

Domains are lowkey expensive - like I wanted to get a second one to do like a blog thing on but geez they're like $15 per which adds up quick.

Quick reminder, your privacy is fucked if you're using stock iOS or Android and your security is fucked if you're using a ROM like Lineage or especially a mobile Linux OS. The only way to have a private and secure phone is with a verifiable mobile operating system like Graphene or even Calyx.

Domain registrars are weird. Namecheap is overpriced, Dynadot is limited and has an obtuse and hard to navigate website, PorkBun lacks many TLDs and is limiting, GoDaddy is crazy expensive and upsells you every chance they get and can charge you for thing you didnt even know you were paying for, Njalla requires crypto to pose any benefit. The list goes on. It seems like all of the choices are flawed in one way or another and on top of it you've got to give all of your info to them for ICANN.
