@sullybiker Yeah, but sadly it's just the way that it goes. What do you mean with Signal? I don't recall them selling out?

@sullybiker I think they have for a few years - just adding to their ever growing monopoly.

@thenewoil Was it really a surprise to anyone? I don't think anybody genuinely thought that an app bought out by Facebook, that is now totally owned by Facebook, with nobody from the original team, who is now under exclusive development from Facebook, sent no data back to Facebook. This privacy policy change is just to cover their asses so they aren't litigated for not explicitly claiming it.

@admin This is hilarious, I love it lol. I really hope this catches on and can be a privacy respecting dating app on its own (sort of like a tinder thing but without all of the invasive shit.)

Good luck!

For some that didn't really care because of the whole "I have nothing to hide" argument, I said that the only way to communicate with me would be through Matrix, and if they wanted to talk they would have to switch. I also may or may not have hounded them on it for a while until eventually I got them to switch haha.

@bazurk@mastodon.online For many of them all it took was an explanation of why discord is so bad. They store messages, images , IP addresses, they can listen to voice calls, they look at all programs open on your PC, they look at all of the tabs open in your browser, etc. All of this data is not just collected, viewed, and stored, but its also sold to over 80 companies and data brokers.

@anon_les I mean hospitals, y'know, the places that store people's very private and sensitive information, primarily use Vista and 7. I don't even know how Wetrix got a code for XP though lol.

@anon_les @Wetrix Yeah Fedora is pretty great! The only reason I didn't recommend things like Arch or Gentoo is because it doesn't sound like they have a lot of experience with Linux, so I didn't want to recommend them something that could negatively influence their first experience with Linux. That said, if you have the experience then those are amazing picks.

@ParmuTownley @Wetrix I was going to recommend them but if Ubuntu and Mint don't install, I didn't think that derivatives would be great, and Pop!_OS is based on Ubuntu and elementaryOS is based on Mint. They'll likely have the same issues occurring during installation.

@gritnot I've found when I told people about the disappearing messages, easy switch, and one-view media, they all liked the prospect and switched over to try it out. Just personal experience though.

Good luck!

@gritnot I'm aware this isn't directed towards me, so you can disregard my comment if you'd like haha.

Browser wallets generally are much worse security-wise when compared to standalone software wallets (assuming the host OS is secure), or especially hardware wallets. If you don't have the current capability of using a hardware wallet, then use a software wallet on a secure host OS or on a live OS that can be set to store things between sessions like tails.

@lefarfadet
Thank you for sharing it around! I really appreciate it!

Have an amazing rest of your day!

@majso I think while there is an element that is proportional to the number or active users, when Twitter was around this size, they were still much more toxic and political. I think the privacy/security/Foss community is just comprised of people who try to be more helpful to introduce people to those fields, though I could be wrong on the reasoning.

Enjoy the rest of your day!

@Wetrix How much experience do you have with Linux? Distributions can be tricky to recommend to people as everyone is looking for different things, but if you've never used Linux before then I'd recommend you check out Fedora. It's got decent security when compared to other distros, has up to date packages, easy installer, fast, etc. Just take a bit of time to check it out and see if it fits what you're looking for, like I said, its hard to recommend things like this with no information haha.

@abc Can't believe this was the thing that did it among everything else but okay.

First post just went live! Its an in-depth post about hardening Firefox that I've been slowly working on in my free time for a long time now.

Enjoy!

Just got an invite from the great people over at PrivacyTools.io to their WriteFreely instance. Enjoy the rest of your day!

@gritnot Rust? Its growing for sure, but things like Kotlin, Go, Java, and C++ still seem to be more popular.
