@Wetrix Because of Facebook. Of course.
I've been using Ubuntu Touch for the better part of today on my old OnePlus 6 and I just want to say I finally get why people say its good but not daily driver ready. I always was like "eh how bad could it be, its got gesture based nav, its optimised for slower hardware, etc" but the gestures are janky and don't work 75% of the time, the apps are almost all webapps, even on my decently fast OP6 video is barely watchable. I wish them the best but its not good enough to daily as it stands now.
Things are so mixed in the tech/privacy world the past few days. The Mario classic stuff all coming out (I know unrelated but I'm still hyped as hell); good. Facebook suspending sales in Germany for Oculus devices due to violation of GDPR and hopefully reducing collection in the EU; good. BUT THEN - Just as I thought Apple was finally going to make a good privacy move for the first time, they pull their privacy features 'for now' because Facebook complained. Like come on.
@Wetrix It will never be as big as something like Twitter, its near impossible due to the differences in marketing, profit strategies, etc. That said, the more people who use it the closer it comes to an alternative instead of it just being some niche service for privacy people as it sort of stands now. Large instances aren't always the best ones, have you tried a smaller one that fits your interests instead of a general one? There might not be as much content, but it tends to be higher quality.
@techlore I've said "Just switch to Linux" more than once before, that said almost every time I then walked people through installing it and getting started. I do think though a certain amount of gatekeeping isn't detrimental to the community, if someone knows about the problems of Facebook, has no reason to still be on it, and still refuses to delete their account, then ask how to not have Facebook collect any of their data, it's hard to answer them seriously.
@7L4V_17738 KDenLive is a surprisingly powerful, FOSS, and easy to learn video editor for Linux - I'd recommend checking it out.
Working on a project to create the most secure flash drive possible for fun (I know it sounds a bit stupid but come on I'm bored). So far my idea is a password protected, encrypted flash drive, containing a KeePass vault which is password locked, which in that KeePass vault contains the password to the encrypted VeraCrypt vault protected by the maximum strength password that KeePassXC can generate. Any other ideas of how to make it even more secure?
@Wetrix I think anyone who's still using Twitter is aware that they're essentially gambling with their personal information. It's an insecure mess of a platform.
@ashfurrow Isn't the new Chromium version of Edge like one of the fastest browsers out there now?
@Tommy I feel like unfortunately the state of the world and the direction that schools are heading will essentially force users to install invasive softwares to participate. It's really disappointing but I think this has been the direction for a while now.
@weltsnake Been using Graphene for about two months now and have never had any problem with speed on my 3a XL. I tested my phone's speed along with the video and mine was much more inline with the speed he demonstrated on Calyx despite me running Graphene. I'd go with Calyx for the increased application support due to MicroG, not for speed. To each their own though, that's all just my opinion.
@Wetrix Honestly feel like this is just a publicity stunt to bring Apple some positive publicity and have people go out and buy iPhones. Apple has never had a true focus on privacy - it's only for their marketing - so I'm not sure why they'd start caring now. I'd love to be wrong on this one, though.
@supernova Getting my PostmarketOS CE soon, couldn't be more excited! How are you liking the PinePhone and Majaro Phosh so far?
@jonah Voted for you, best of luck!
@Tommy There's also Startpage to index Google results and DeepL as a Google Translate alternative.
@lefarfadet Almost all of their bundled apps are other FOSS projects that they've taken and rebranded as /e/, this is never disclosed to the user when using the platform or any of the apps. In fact, the whole mobile OS itself is skinned LineageOS with MicroG. To make matters even worse, they didn't just take those FOSS apps and rebrand them, they then force you to have an /e/ account to use some of them. Theres more that I didn't go over, but the whole company just screams shady to me.
uhh... not good at bios... I'm a privacy and security advocate and motion designer from earth (i think.)
