Normie: "Facebook is stealing my data through WhatsApp!"
Me: "How about you switch to a decentralized alternative?"
Normie: "Fuck that! I'll just make a mock account on Facebook!"
Me: "That won't do anything. They'll still know who you are through your phone"
Normie: "Then I will make a WhatsApp mockup account! They won't know it's me!"
Me: "Oh, really? Will you also provide a fake, probably stolen phone number too? Will you use a proxy, TOR, I2P, or at least a VPN to hide your IP address? Will you also route your DNS queries through TOR or at least a safe enough DNS server over HTTPS? Will you also root your device and spoof your MAC address, as well as your IMEI, phone brand, model, serial number, OS version, AND your WLAN SSID? Will also ALL of your contacts do the exact same thing, so that they don't know who is who and who is contacting who? Will you at least give a fake name?"
Normie: "... Fuck that shit! I'm switching to Telegram!"

Computer manuals detailed not only how to operate them in detail, but also how to program them and how they work with all the technical details.
Why was that important back then? Because if you didn't know all of this, you wouldn't understand the piece of technology you use, and you wouldn't be able to make a proper use of it. If you didn't have the time to learn all this, you would just stay away from it, no problem. In fact, when the internet was just a stub, at first, most of it's users were mathematicians, engineers, and people who knew how to flip a few bits.
Nowadays since our technology has become way more complex, people is focusing more in "user experience". Making it friendly by abstracting all these details while at the same time making it easier to use for people who, as you mention, doesn't have the time (or rather the will) to understand it. Not only that, but companies and corporations, as well as the governments, wants everyone to join the internet because, as you can guess, it's a perfect platform for monetization and monitoring.
This means that, as of right now, 90% of the internet users are browsing the internet having 0 idea of what they are doing or the consequences of what they are doing, while at the same time using a device (a handheld computer they call "phone") that they know absolutely NOTHING about.
Now tell me how this isn't going to end in a complete disaster.
