Stingle (stingle.org/) looks very promising as a Google Photos replacement.
- Open source
- Photos are encrypted before upload
- Only users have the keys
- 1GB free storage with several payed options up to 20TB

I'm no expert on any of this, much less code. More people that have the time and knowledge should take a look at their code and see if this could be a solid option. (github.com/stingle)

@weltsnake Crypt.ee is pretty nice as well for another option, from what I can see they take privacy very seriously.

@ThreeBadgersInATrenchcoat I like Crypt.ee but it has it's limitations. From the last time I used it they didn't have support for videos and synchronization was painfully slow for large amounts of data. I should check them out again and see if anything changed. I always considered them a great option though
