@soudk I avoid most social media but there are several ways of browsing them. I like the alternative web frontends for twitter (e.g. nitter.net) and reddit (teddit.net, libredd.it) and use these quite a bit. Logging in isn't possible however. On mobile there are also apps, at least for android that let you use social media im a way private way. For Reddit I can recommend slide from f-droid. Quite feature-rich and logging in is possible.
Feel free to ask more if you want :)

@soudk I'm assuming you are aware of all the options presented on privacytools.io
For calendar/contacts I use a self-hosted nextcloud instance which supports synching via caldav/carddav. Also most email providers offer this service. I'm at posteo and it's fine (can't have custom domains though) but I think all of the services on privacytools work. Most people seem to prefer protonmail but that's too expensive for my taste.

@ThreeBadgersInATrenchcoat I see. I haven't watched their videos that much but I confess I tend to believe what I read and hear myself...

@freddy To be honest, I've resigned myself to an existence in a niche when it comes to online privacy. I don't think the majority of people will ever care.

@redcoqui I like OSMand from F-Droid. Otherwise magicearth works decently I think.

@crasher35 @threemaapp That is easy to find out you know. Donations. E.g. from one of the founders of WhatsApp

@RKatJena @kuketzblog Wozu braucht man auf einer solchen Website ohne besondere Funktionen denn cookies? Also ganz ernst gemeinte Frage

@CaptSutter @resist1984 Same. Also why have I never heard of this if it's so very private? I couldn't find any more info on the page.

@krock @syntax Been trying to strip the DRM from my ebooks but so far I was unsuccessful. In the future I'll just avoid any DRM I think, I just bought those books because I wasn't aware this is a thing

@ParmuTownley @thelinuxEXP Yes and no. Android is based on the kernel but that's basically where the similarities end.

@Obscurequokka You could now ask the question whether it is more important who hosts, creates and maintains the infrastructure or who provides the content.
In my own very subjective experience American content seems quite out of proportion with respect to the proportion of the world's population they make up.

@redcoqui Nothing and I'm incredibly glad about it. I fully switched some time ago and have no regrets. It also greatly enhanced my understanding of computers, networking and a lot more in the process which I think is a noteworthy benefit of the process.

@syntax You could do a kodi install on an RPI or some such with a Netflix app installed. That works relatively well in my experience

@Obscurequokka The companies exerting the most influence on it are all US American, no?
