Can someone recommend a phone to buy for a person who is not technologically proficient at all and has never owned a smartphone but is not a privacy disaster? I'm really not sure here.

I'd recommended to take a look at the supported devices from GrapheneOS grapheneos.org/faq#device-supp
or CalyxOS calyxos.org/get

GrapheneOS has no google stuff atall, while Calyx has microG which is an free implementation of google services; if you want to use apps that require them.

Both OS's have fairly well written install guides.

@sp1rit Calyx looks really neat. I'll check that out more.
