@ParmuTownley What about XMPP? All of the chat services you mentioned are centralized so they are prone to metadata analysis.

@ParmuTownley Interesting read, thanks! But the problem of metadata still hasn't been solved in centralized systems. The argument could also be made in the opposite direction: If you use a multi-messenger or have a working notification center, it doesn't matter that federated protocols can't evolve because you can easily switch between networks. I have email, XMPP and Matrix all on one phone, and if after Matrix another new protocol for federated messaging will appear I will include that as well
