There seems to be a rise in the diagnoses of #ADHD in the US, curiously correlated with the rise of big pharma and drugs like Adderall.
So are we becoming more distractable? Is it a result of more awareness? Or is it the result of collusion between the medical providers, insurance and pharmaceutical companies?
I ask this as someone who has been diagnosed with #ADHD by a professional psychologist.
An industry modeled around #privacy respecting advertising in 2021.
Viable or not?

Lot of accounts here on #Mastodon not only engage in assigning guilt-by-association to every #privacy software but are also not helping the community with their hostility. The internet is nasty enough, we need to be nice and understanding to others.
Otherwise, it’s just like the big blue bird all over again.
Imagine you are a vegan activist.
Would you want 5 people to go 100% vegan or 500 who are at least 20% vegan?
On top of this, imagine trashing the 495 who are not 100% vegan but are trying.
How do you think they feel about you and your cause?
More importantly which path saves more animals?
This entire thread exemplifies the problem that virtually every noble cause suffers from, especially online.
The extremists and purists doggedly bat for 100% all or nothing thinking which hinders progress.
I get it, we need to strive for perfect ideals. But being radically stubborn and trashing marginal improvements only alienate the audience that we are trying to convince.

Let this post be your reminder to take a break and do something other than look at a screen for at least an hour. Call a loved one. Read a book. Listen to an entire music album from start to finish. Sleep. Exercise. Go for a walk. Do some yard work. Write a letter. Write in your journal. Go outside. Spend time with someone. Go for a drive. Clean and organize your desk. Practice a musical instrument. Sing. Dance. Cook. Bake. Go for a bike ride. Meditate. Pray. Practice juggling. Build a canoe.
The profile notes feature on Mastodon is very useful but also perhaps slightly unclear if you've never used it before.
It works like this:
Go to a person's profile by clicking on their name, look for the "Note" section and then click on "Click to add note", start typing and it saves it automatically. The note is only visible to you.
This is really handy if you interact with lots of people and need to remember (for example) why you follow someone etc.
First of all, a formidable article.
Second, the only comment in the comment section exemplifies the kind of audience we are trying to convince
Finished a book in an hour after binging on video games for a couple of hours.
Hyperfocus is real #ADHD
Some of the tactics I see online are straight from middle school playground fights.
You don’t wanna engage in a worthless bad faith debate?
“You must be weak”
“Why don’t you come fight me, punk!”
Also civil discourse involves debating ideas, not personal slurs and whatabout-ism.
Sadly we are seeing a rapid decline of such conversations, not just in the political spheres but even smaller internet communities
This doesn’t mean all opinions are equally valid and worthy.
Just that my engagement or lack thereof shouldn’t be treated as tacit agreement or disagreement with the said opinion.
Your friendly neighborhood person.
