Facebook and Google to be forced to share advertising revenue with Australian media companies | Media | The Guardian - https://www.theguardian.com/media/2020/apr/19/facebook-and-google-to-be-forced-to-share-advertising-revenue-with-australian-media-companies
@mister_monster @Wetrix seems reasonable to me, if it's their content originally and those companies are making a profit off of it then they should be paying for it.
@mister_monster @Wetrix perhaps you're right, I read 'pay news media for use of their content ...' and figured that was the main aim, but it may be more of a protectionist strategy, need to read more about it. It seems to me that they aren't paying royalties for the content currently, which the media companies might have let slide before but in the wake of this crisis they could really use the money, so its become more of an issue.
@MrNarrow @Wetrix if it is their content then aren't they due royalties already? I don't think that is what this is, I think Australia is protecting their existing media industry by forcing Google to share revenue since they are losing market share.
