How many of you would have a podcast (or something similar) if you could remain anonymous?

@InternetRooky That sounds intriguing, but we would need to also use voice masking technology to really be anonymous. I have never heard a podcast doing that.

@krock I was thinking exactly that actually. And what if there was a software suite that did the audio or video masking for you to lower the barrier to entry.
I think if the intention to stay anonymous was given up front and multiple people were doing it, the audience wouldnt find it so strange.

I like the idea of focusing on the ideas and not the identity of the person.

@InternetRooky Agreed. Removing the voice of the speaker (changing from a man to woman for example) let's us focus more on the message than how flowery the voice may be. I think many of us would have no problem with this. I use some pretty bad TTS for my ebooks since Google TTS is off limits on my Graphene. So I am used to it. I do not know what tools are available in this area though.

@krock I use TTS also - for textbooks. Works surprisingly well when the eyes are too tired to read.

There's some free options out there for voice changers. I've used Clownfish which is decent.

I'm wondering though, if you have voice modifying software that uses a preset change to your voice (i.e. pitch up by 40%, etc.) someone could probably reverse the effects to get your original voice for doxxing purposes.

Just you responding is making me think more deeply about this topic, so thank you.

@krock Maybe run the voice through multiple filters with parameters that are randomized and it would be too complex to reverse.

@InternetRooky I have no doubt it is possible. I think the technique might create additional interest in the shows as it will have that forbidden allure ;) It could certainly open up discussions by creating that freedom gained from anonymity.

@InternetRooky Many people in this community for example work both sides of the fence. We work for tech giants by day and FOSS by night. We have a lot to say but do not want to get blacklisted.

@InternetRooky
Why not blogging on Tor? You still have problem of distributing your voice recordings obfuscated or not

@nikolal Maybe both?
This is a good point. We'd still prob want to avoid having to post to major platforms and if we don't do that, how's monetizing even work.
Having many thoughts, will have to chew on this.

@InternetRooky I would. My favorite TV show doesn’t have any podcasts (that I’ve found) and I would love to do a deep dive on it since it only got one season before cancelation. Like was already mentioned, just doing simple voice change stuff like increase/decrease pitch would be too easy to decode I think, so a voice anonymizer would need to be more complex or random. Or just use a computer voice to read out the script? (So impersonal, though.)

@thedeltaflyer Good TV show + only 1 season = Firefly. If I'm right, you're nearly doxxed haha.

For the computer reading out the script, I agree too impersonal. I think preserving the inflection in the voice is critical to connecting with the audience.
If I think about videos on youtube there is some cringe factor or some feeling that its inauthentic the moment you start hearing the computer voice.

@InternetRooky lmfao it’s not Firefly! I’ve never actually seen it (yet)! But if I told you what the show was, I’d probably nearly doxx myself, since it’s so niche. 😜 I’ve thought about doing an anonymous blog for the show, but I like the way some podcasts play one or two few-second clips to emphasize a scene or important point and I’d love to be able to do that as part of the analysis every episode.

@thedeltaflyer That's exactly what a Firefly fan would say! 😂
Def worth watching though.

Yeah, I like your idea. There has to be more fans that would appreciate the commentary. Could be in the format of like a Directors commentary. As with a lot of this stuff it seems like video editing is a big barrier. But you can do a side by side video recording pretty easy with something like OBS.
