Just made my first personal Mastodon account here on the new privacytools.io instance and the first toot I see is about my project @cryptpad

@BurungHantu y'all sure know how to make a guy feel welcome!

@hikerus That is the beauty of Usability. Good systems are self-explanatory. Mastodon is great, it just lacks in a good new user experience. The goal is just to make it easier, whats your problem with that?

@hikerus I'm not sure if I want to spend my day following users to make this work. I'd rather go hiking ;-)

Would this autofollow bot for example have the same effect? github.com/gled-rs/mastodon-au

@hikerus I gave you the name of the book including the author. You need a link?

"Do you really know Mastodon?" Great question. I've started my instance only a week ago, this helps me to understand issues new users have and to see usability problems.

What else? You claimed it's not the problem for new instances. But if new users face problems, it becomes the problem of the instance.

@chriswiegman That is great news, Chris. That helps to start a new instance. But the question was from a user perspective, not admin. It's explained here: github.com/tootsuite/mastodon/

@Mayana @Tusky @debian Nice. Debian is in the list now. Please let me know if you find another one.

@hikerus @kensanata @horsemans Thanks for sharing. This discussion shows the usability problems of Mastodon. Is an instance admin supposed to follow all its users so they see content? Relays fix it? I dont know to what degree. Should we install an autofollow bot for mastodon? Connecting users with each other should be easier. A social network relys on a feature like that.

@hikerus @kensanata "it' s the problem of new users who didn't understand the principle of the that THEY have to do something at first - to join others"

That is against any web usability principle. "Don't Make Me Think" is a book by Steve Krug and the title is a good rule already. Mastodon doesnt explain any of that to new users, makes users think and doesnt show anyone to follow with no tools to help. Instances rely on users, so it becomes a problem of the instance.

@kensanata @teecee Thats good advice. I've just changed it back to the local timeline since we have some activity.

@talon Well, it could have been 600 euros worth of drives. The glass is half full! 😆
